INSTANT MESSAGING OVER HF

Voice is not always the right tool when a channel is marginal, and the message must be exact. Codan Chat answers that with fast, error free peer-to-peer text over HF. The Codan Chat Console presents a familiar Instant Messenger style interface for typing messages, so a quick note can go out and the HF link can close, or the link can stay open for a full chat session. Two radios each connected to Codan Chat through a PC and keyboard exchange short text messages directly. Every message is logged for later review. A quick message can be sent and the HF link closed in seconds, conserving airtime on a busy net.

TEXT, FILE, AND EMAIL ON ONE CONSOLE

Operators rarely need only one form of data. Codan Chat combines text messaging, file transfer, and a full email client in a single radio chat application. The inbuilt Codan Console Mailer gives quick access to messages sent and received, and a local SMTP/POP3 server lets a commercial email client connect alongside it. A picture resizer trims images to minimise transmission times over HF. Support for ALE and Selcall, scheduled calling, broadcast messaging, and a GPS connection rounds out the radio chat application. The email composer creates a message, attaches a file, and sends it or queues it for later transmission.

ENCRYPTED DATA, FIELD READY

Sensitive traffic over HF needs protection that travels with the message. Within Codan Chat, all data can be sent in clear mode or encrypted using the inbuilt compression and encryption algorithm, and when combined with a radio's Privacy mode, text messages move securely from the application to a radio. Large buttons support touch screen operation in the field, and the interface stays usable on modest hardware.
