Cellular telephony is the primary means of communication for most of the world, but in remote conflict zones it is dangerously fragile. Cell towers become single points of failure for entire regions, and armed insurgent groups increasingly destroy or disable that infrastructure to create communication blackouts, cover attacks and exert control over a civilian population.
Technical and strategic countermeasures exist, but most are unfeasible for the remote, underfunded regions most at risk. High-frequency (HF) radio, which refracts signals off the ionosphere to communicate over vast distances without any fixed infrastructure, remains the only suitable solution.
Simpler to use than ever, with zero ongoing costs and a lifespan measured in decades, HF gives isolated communities and government branches a resilient, independent means of staying connected when cellular networks are denied.
